Please note that the kind people at Goalscape have responded to this post and clarified some of my comments. Full thread is here: https://goalscape.tenderapp.com/discussions/bugreport/147-review-of-goalscape but the key points are copied out below.

Great to see someone taking customer service so seriously and having worked some more with the software I have taken the plunge and bought the software and am extremely happy with the purchase.

******

Sorry that our nomenclature is not clearer. Yes, we sometimes refer to the Goalscape format as "a goalscape"; when we are referring specifically to the multi-level pie chart though we try to stick to the term "goal map". The section on the right that contains information about the selected goal is the "panel". I realise that some of our older videos may need updating...

We also call the .GSP files "goalscapes" to differentiate them from online "projects" in Goalscape Connect. As you know, the two versions of the software are essentially similar in functionality and 'look and feel'; they use slightly different data formats though, so when you upload .GSP files from Desktop to Connect (and download online projects as .GSP files) there is a conversion process.

I respect your refusal to "go into the philosophical debate around whether this is actually desirable or valid" – nice dodge! We try to avoid it too: if people want to use the term 'tasks' to refer to bottom-level subgoals (which may be binary – ie either 0% or 100% complete), that's fine. And if they are sequential (one must be finished before the next can begin), they can be placed clockwise around the parent, using the relevant Start and End dates to constrain them. Relative importance still applies; and the importance of a task is still reflected in its contribution to progress in the parent when it is completed.

For the task list function you can also use Export to XLSX, open in it in a spreadsheet application and use the Sort Data function to produce task lists by date, subgoal area, responsibility, etc. As you say, we are investigating additional task management functionality and/or integrating with third party tools. See our online survey here (you can vote on some proposed new features and suggest your own ideas).

Yes, you can store your Desktop .GSP files in the cloud – and of course the Goalscape Desktop licence is perpetual (it includes full support and free upgrades for life) and provides a free 6-month subscription to Connect.

Goalscape Connect also has several advantages (even for a single user working on solo projects) including convenience and security. You can read and update your online projects from any computer anywhere in the world; and (should you lose a laptop, have a break-in or suffer a disastrous hardware crash), losing your equipment does not mean losing all your work.

The witches ghost - one of the scooby doo feature films that does have a real ghost - set in Salem.
As for aliens - the drake equation -
N = N* fp ne fl fi fc fL
N* represents the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy
Question: How many stars are in the Milky Way Galaxy?
Answer: Current estimates are 100 billion.
fp is the fraction of stars that have planets around them
Question: What percentage of stars have planetary systems?
Answer: Current estimates range from 20% to 50%.
ne is the number of planets per star that are capable of sustaining life
Question: For each star that does have a planetary system, how many planets are capable of sustaining life?
Answer: Current estimates range from 1 to 5.
fl is the fraction of planets in ne where life evolves
Question: On what percentage of the planets that are capable of sustaining life does life actually evolve?
Answer: Current estimates range from 100% (where life can evolve it will) down to close to 0%.
fi is the fraction of fl where intelligent life evolves
Question: On the planets where life does evolve, what percentage evolves intelligent life?
Answer: Estimates range from 100% (intelligence is such a survival advantage that it will certainly evolve) down to near 0%.
fc is the fraction of fi that communicate
Question: What percentage of intelligent races have the means and the desire to communicate?
	Answer: 10% to 20%
fL is fraction of the planet's life during which the communicating civilizations live
Question: For each civilization that does communicate, for what fraction of the planet's life does the civilization survive?
Answer: This is the toughest of the questions. If we take Earth as an example, the expected lifetime of our Sun and the Earth is roughly 10 billion years. So far we've been communicating with radio waves for less than 100 years. How long will our civilization survive? Will we destroy ourselves in a few years like some predict or will we overcome our problems and survive for millennia? If we were destroyed tomorrow the answer to this question would be 1/100,000,000th. If we survive for 10,000 years the answer will be 1/1,000,000th.
When all of these variables are multiplied together when come up with:
N, the number of communicating civilizations in the galaxy

The real question is - can they be bothered with our very young bit of space?

The real question is – can they be bothered with our very young bit of space?

Paul Hegarty sent me this excellent and relevant snippet which I reproduce here: "On the theme of sparks of light: the Italians refer to "scintille" as the brief moments of brilliance in which we can appreciate the eternal." I love it! Thanks, Paul.

Further to posting this I was contacted by Seamus Cullen the current owner of the estate. Seamus writes:

"I am the author of the article in Oughterany and I own the property where Mary Watson lived in Baltracey. Unfortunately nothing remains of the house where Mary lived and nothing further has come to light of Mary or her child. As a member of the Society of Friends she was treated better than other christians who gave birth to a child out of wedlock in 18th century Ireland. Her relative Margo who lived subsequently in Larchill also had a tragic life. She was orphaned at a young age, married off to her first cousin for property inheritance reasons and died childless aged fifty. "

Many thanks to Seamus for taking the time to follow up the post.
